The Wolf Among Us Reviews (PS4, Xbox One)

The Wolf Among Us is a fantasy adventure video game for Xbox One with interactive episodic gameplay. It is based on the Eisner award-winning Fables comic book series written by Bill Willingham. The game is developed by Telltale Games, the same team who brought you 2012 Game of the Year, The Walking Dead. It has five episodes. It was released for Xbox One in November 2014. It is a single-player game. It is a mature take on creatures and characters of legends and fairytales. The Wolf Among Us is shady, often very brutal and extremely violent. The game is taking place in 1986, nearly twenty years before the Fables.

The game is based on a third-person perspective and played just like the majority of the RPGs where the player handles and controls a character in the game. In this game, you control the character called Bigby Wolf (The Big Bad Wolf). The game starts with Bigby Wolf investigating the murder of a woman. Since it is an adventure game involving murder investigation, therefore, you will be exploring three-dimensional objects in the gameplay consisting of buildings, bars, and apartments and will be tasked to solve puzzles and Quick Time Events (QTEs).

You’ll be asked to interact with different characters during the play where your dialogue will be shown in form of dialogue trees. You have the option to select the dialogue options and your selection will affect how other characters will view Bigby Wolf. This is very critical in the gameplay as their perceptions will influence events in further stages of the game.

The five episodes are below;

  1. Episode 1 – Faith
  2. Episode 2 – Smoke and Mirrors
  3. Episode 3 – A Crooked Mile
  4. Episode 4 – In Sheep’s Clothing
  5. Episode 5 – Cry Wolf

The Wolf Among Us has earned great remarks and ratings from all mentionable sources. The series was nominated for several awards for Outstanding Achievements in Story and Adventure Game of the Year for D.I.C.E Awards by Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences. It was also nominated for two BAFTA Games Awards in 2014.

Its aggregate review scores on GameRankings have been in the range of 71.36% to 88.80%, averaging around 80%. Similarly, Metacritic scores are also up in the eighties.

Here are some mentionable positive points of the game.

  • Amazing graphics and detailed architects.
  • Narrative nature of the game.
  • It has excellent art styles and event-matching music.
  • You can miss QTEs and you don’t have to replay the whole sequence.
  • Five episodes, setup just like a TV series.
  • Meaningful choices that affect gameplay.
  • The game is a prequel and set before the events seen in the first issue.

A list of potential cons is below;

  • Detraction due to stuttering.
  • Lip synching is slightly off.
  • Occurrence of framerate drops and seldom freezes

The primary audience of this game is adults since it includes violence sequels and mature language and brutality. To be fair, this is what most people love to play with.

You don’t have to be an experienced gamer to enjoy this game to its fullest. The game is very addictive due to its narrative storyline and curiosity with every completed sequence. You’ll find yourself in control of something very demanding yet playable at the same time. On top of its narrative storyline, seldom action sequences and violence in between will keep you on your toes. Not to mention the stupendously composed music which enriches the overall experience and creates wow effect.

The game comes on a DVD for Xbox One. When you start the game for the very first time, it will take you into training mode where you’ll be trained to play the game. You’ll even be judged and asked to perform certain actions to train you on all necessary controls.

Everything is well thought of and planned so you won’t find yourself in hot waters at the start. You’ll be trained, explained and informed about all the information required to enjoy the game to its fullest. The link HERE has all the required training and game control information you need.

The game is available on DVD as well as via downloadable file. If you choose the second option, you need a stable connection to download a file of approximately 5GB of size. You will get all the training that is required within the game itself. For support regarding glitches and framerate drops, updates are made to overcome those issues but the majority of the issues are not with the game but rather with the console. You can resolve the issues with restarts, though.

If you are into action, adventure and enjoy playing ruthless & violent games like GTA then you will love this series. It is a real mature take on legendary and fairytale characters, emphasized enough already.

The Wolf Among Us will definitely awake your inner Big Bad Wolf with its violent sequences and heart-throbbing music. If I am to rate this game on the scale of 1-10, I would gladly rate it no less than 8, cutting down a couple of points for infrequent glitches and framerate drops.

Give it a try and you’ll submerge in the cosmos of Bigby Wolf – The Bad Wolf.
